  1. The development of Kalafong Hospital

Building operations at this hospital started in 1965. The doors were opened on 1 March 1972 for patient treatment but the official opening took place a year later, on 9 March 1973 when the Honourable, Mr Sybrand van Niekerk, then Administrator of the Transvaal did the honours.

Kalafong Hospital is situated 12 km west from the city centre of Pretoria, next to Atteridgeville.

Medical Ordonances are also trained on behalf of the SA Military Service.

Lebone College of Nursing gained autonomy on 1 January 1986 and is also situated on the premises. The College is responsible for the training of pre-registration nursing students. The post graduate course in Nursing Administration and the training for Enrolled Nurses are also presented. These students are housed in the nursing residence on the grounds.

The opening of the Evans Maternity Section early in 1991 greatly extended the service for maternity cases. In 1972 ten beds were allocated to maternity cases. After completion of this section the number of beds rose to 40 beds for Maternity, 40 Neo-natal beds, 3 first stage and 8 Obstetrics beds.

The extension of services are also reflected in the growth of the budget, which amounts R128 million at the moment, as well as in the staff number, which rose to 2 800. The close dominant factor is the huge rise in patient numbers. The patient statistics reads as follows:

    Out patients 1 090 17 400
