| The University of Pretoria further
strengthened its position as a market leader in
the higher education sector over the past year.
Transparency and meaningful participation by all
role players continued to characterise its management
style. The emphasis that has been and is placed
on promoting equal opportunities and employment
equity has started to pay dividends.
An important management initiative involved
the implementation of a new decentralised management
system that allows the Facilities greater responsibilities.
The goal is to ensure that academics are given
as much freedom as possible from administrative
tasks that do not add value to the University's
core business, namely education and research.
A healthy, legal and functional corporate management
structure is a prerequisite for the effective
functioning of an organisation as large and
extensive as the University of Pretoria. It
is therefore essential for the University to
meet statutory requisites such as the accepted
principles of sound governance.
The University's corporate management structures,
constructed in accordance with the Higher Education
Act, are the University Council, the Senate
and the Institutional Forum. In addition to
these formal bodies, there are those, such as
the faculty boards, student structures and the
Alumni Council, that support the University's
authority structures.
The Chancellor of the University, Dr Chris
Stals, was reappointed for a further term of
five years. His term of office expires on 31
December 2005.
